The mom lost her husband, her youngest son looks the most like her dead husband. After the death of her husband the wife became obsessed with her youngest son. The reason she hated her oldest son was because one the youngest said he wanted to marry him, two also because her obsession made her see her oldest child as nuisance. All her letters said the same thing. "Never come back." "Give me back Will.", she was pretty much on the line of ignoring him to wanting to murder him.
If both son's remand away then more then likely she would have gone made and tried to kill the oldest son, in the end she would have ended up in a mental hospital or prison for attempted murder.
And as said in the comment the scar is from the gun shot.
Personally speaking I wouldn't be surprised if the mom killed herself.

I want a sequel where the little brother falls in love. I feel a girl would have to due. The girl looks like his brother his mother tries to get rid of her the boy erupts and he and the girl elope. The the mom goes mad and dies. I hate women like her. Though if she can still think clearly with her obsession of her son and the mental part of her can be fixed she should live to make up for her action. Other then that she can go to hell.
