I reread parts last night and I have a suspicion he found out after they had that date at the hotel and end up spending the night there as both are too drunk to go home. He starts acting awkward after that stay. Around chapter 30. Maybe he felt or saw something. It would explain why he suddenly starts avoiding her and starts acting cold while he is trying to process his feeling for someone of the same gender. That's my interpretation.
