How much time do I have to wait to pick up a manhwa without it being considered sniping? There’s this one person group that picked up four amazing series, but they update a chapter every three months. A lot of groups have contacted this person offering to take up the series or collab for faster releases, but she says she wants to do things at her own pace. I get where she’s coming from, but at the same time I feel like this is selfish thinking. Being a scanlator myself, when I feel like I can’t provide fast(ish) releases I just drop the project, as the readers will suffer from my pacing. I don’t want to snipe her, I’m a bit torn. My groups want to take up a series and she refused. Should we just drop the idea of picking it up? I don’t want to be the bad guy
Hmm, that is pretty difficult. Idk much about scanlation processes, but that does seem unfair how she is monopolizing those projects. However, I feel like her decision should be respected. I do think that you should definitely be persistent about it and not give up right away. Maybe try to persuade her the best way you can and hopefully she might give in. But if she continues refusing, I suggest you just let her be. Btw, I appreciate your efforts and thank you so much for the works y’all have done.
I kind of understand your point. Sometimes, this happens to large groups as well. They just rush to get a chapter out of a bunch of series that catch their eyes, but then don't update till like 5-6 months later. It's almost like they just rush to claim them as their projects, even if that means stretching their resources thin & updates become sparse. I know as readers I can't complain too much, but still... Sniping is always a grey area. I think the general rule at manga dex where groups congregate is that you can do it, & let the reader count gives the verdict; e.g. is the faster sniper better/at same quality as the slower group? If yes, more readers will read the sniper's updates, if not, then the slower group will win the count. But the hard part about it is people who can't accept sniping; they would sometimes vilify/chastise you, even when you exert a lot of efforts to give the updates. But let me ask you 2 questions. How far ahead is this slow group in the series right now? If it's not too far ahead, I suggest you redo from chapter 1. That way, no one can accuse you of sniping, coz you start from the beginning. It becomes fair competition if anything. Does this slow group posts only on aggregate websites, or do they post on websites dedicated for scanlators? If they only post only on aggregate websites, then it's good news for you, since you can get more leverage by posting on scanlator dedicated websites, which are the sources that feed the aggregates. That's all I can say, it's not a lot of help. I guess ultimately the decision is yours and yours only.
Thank you for your articulated answer! I considered sniping because as you said, it’s a grey area, but I don’t want my group to have a bad reputation. We do upload on mangad ex, readers there care more about those things I feel like. I didn’t think about retranslating everything from chapter 1 that’d be the best option, so thank you! They only uploaded the first two chapters in five months, it’s doable. I’ll talk about it with my group! You helped a lot.
And yeah I agree with you, scanlating has become a popularity contest for some groups, some people just do it for the wrong reasons...
From Wikipedia: the Gonfaloniere was the holder of a highly prestigious communal office in medieval and Reinassance Italy, notably in the Papal States.
It doesn’t mean flag bearer in this case. A minor detail that I find interesting! The person mentioned as the gonfaloniere is involved in politics and has an important role in the Romagna state.
