i don't remember how i was when i first started reading because i've been reading yaoi since i was around10(i'm 19 now) but i've noticed that a lot of people have problems with incest/shota/yaoi rape culture... but it just doesn't bother me because i have yaoi in like.. it's own separate world from my own... it's actually made me stop reading comments on certain mangas because i know it's only going to be people complaining... i was wondering if it just takes people a while to be able to separate fiction from real world? i know that the popularity of it has gone up rapidly over the past couple years
like i can never pull characters or stories from a manga and try and put them in our world... but i sometimes imagine myself in theirs... maybe it's just that a lot of normal people have found yaoi and havent really learned that the author is going to write what they wish to portray so just read and enjoy the story... or not... it's all up to you.. i just feel like the newer generation has made the bl community 10x more toxic.. like this used to be a place where i could relate to people and escape reality.. and now, unless it's fully colored with "hot" Korean men for y'all to simp over, there's something wrong.... personally, i enjoy all aspects of yaoi.. i just wish people would stop being so sensitive
Oh its weird when I started reading yaoi back on 2009? I would read any yaoi I got my eyes on and I dont remember any colored comic like those Chinese and Korean we got now, shounen ai too
We still have plenty of those comic with rape incest and stuff but from my point of view theres a lot more to plot on bl because of internet
I mean most yaoi had between 4 to 7 chapters to make sense of anything and get published the very first yaoi mangas had this vibes and most likely was what publishers would look for because that was successful
I think with time yaoi got easier to distribute more publishers and web comics sites started and so we got more variety in stories making many tipes of yaoi readers
I look back to what 12 year old me read or watch and definitely don't like those anymore
The Korean hot dudes do help tho lol I still enjoy black and white Japanese manga but prefer the cozy wholesome stories and porn without drama
I'm definitely sure theres still a lot of readers who enjoy the rapey, incest stuff(I actually read incest without problem if its consensual) but I can also see why people would dislike some stories too
I mean I recently went and saw papa to kiss in the dark and fam let tell you that was creepy af lol same to No money?
These now a days give me the creeps but I read those back them I don't now
Everyone has different likes and dislikes
Also the only think I really really get worried is with the shota and loli thing because you never know if you might be feeding a pedo you know
i know.. and i feel you but it's really like with the newer generation of readers on mangago, everything they don't like, they try to condemn or make things unnecessarily awkward with their overly judgy and negative opinions instead of just admitting that they read the whole story and liked it on the low... i read whatever i'm in the mood for... like just now, i was reading "Directors Dessert" and (spoiler) at the end with the whole half brother thing.. i just wanted to see what people was saying about the whole plot twist with his fetish and where it came from but instead every single comment was about how the incest made the story weird.. when i didn't even think twice about it and yet not a single person said that they were going to drop the story... they just judged the authors work.. like i feel like if you're going to have such a strong opinion on things then at least go and comment on the authors original work.. and it's not even that serious for people to be so toxic....
Oh I'm reading that too
I'm definitely keep reading it that chapters I was like oh I don't like this guy for doing this with the dude asleep and got really creeped ou by the brother just walking in and jerking him but my brain just "oh so that's how he got so fucked up" and I'm sure the author is going to develop that in future chapters but the weirdness of their interaction doesn't make the story bad
I was a very distressing chapter but really I think people forgot that main character was literally having sex with the director because he thinks he's going to die if de doesn't
Oh you now "our future" the one with the red haired dude? Spoilers
The "side couple" was definitely problematic both of the characters really got me angry and annoyed because of rape and some abusive behaviour I just skipped the chapters with them they didn't affected the main story that much also for some reason I dont think they vibed with the other characters in the story at all
BL is highly fictional. It’s not meant to portray a realistic gay relationship. It’s smut wrote by women for women; That’s why it’s easy to detach it from reality. However I don’t think that’s a feasible excuse for romanticising paedophilia or rape.
My biggest issue with the rape trope is that it’s never taken seriously. The victim ends up back with the abuser and they are offered no support. It’s a grey area were the abuser is just labelled as “possessive” and “passionate”. Honestly, the whole scene just makes me physically uncomfortable.
I don’t know you, but If I were to make a bold claim with absolutely no backing,I think a possible reason you don’t see the issue is because you have been reading since you were a child and now desensitised. I’m not preaching, I started reading at 14 and I’m now 16 so technically still not the demographic . I think it’s great you can see yaoi as something fictional. It’s just that’s not the case for a surprising number of readers.
I was sexually abused last year, so my opinion is extremely biased and I’m fully aware that if I don’t like it, I should just not read it. And I don’t. there is a massive difference between reading stuff with rape and watching someone get raped. And I think that if you aren’t hurting anyone you should be able to enjoy what you like. However the message that it sends is extremely dangerous. It normalises rape and it further pushes a shame culture in which victims find it harder to come out.
like whats y'all's issue with shota and rape-turned love in yaoi? like, just hear me out.
i understand that it's immoral in our world.. like that's manipulation and just disgusting and weird but, it's "fiction" and it's also what the author chose to write about.. like for me, it doesn't bother me.. except for the cliche storylines and cringe moments but at the same time, i don't know if it's just me but.. all manga/manwha/webtoons or w.e are in a completely separate realm for me.. like asian countries have a more defined line between real world and fantasy. like if you can't separate real world and fantasy, just say that..:/ you american people just seem too sensitive
IN YAOI ONLY... not bara or shotacon in real life.
i've only seen a few actual yaoi stories with shota but usually the underaged character is like 14-17... mind you, the age of consent in japan is 13. but i understand not being able to read the smut ones because it's weird but i just find it weird when people bash other people for being ok with it and i don't really understand it..
like when i read a really good romance manga.. I have to basically create the rest of their lives in my head or it'll keep bothering me... or when i'm reading something and the ending is disappointing or just wasn't the good vibes that i needed, i have to create like an entirely different situation in my mind or else i'll just continue to think about it
so it's this manga... the uke is a high ranking demon and was sent by the demon king to take over the world.. i think... and this guy who has everything the world has to offer is bored and the high ranking demon charges into his house.. gets raped and ends up becoming the mans slave or something.. it's two chapters long and the one thing i remember for sure is that the ukes friend from the demon world comes and has to go through the elevator to check on the uke but the seme ends up taking the uke at the door and telling the ukes demon friend that the uke isn't going anywhere... or something like that.. IT WAS VERY SPICY(≧∀≦)... thank you in advance
