This manga went from 0-100 REAL quick. It’s interesting how there’s a trope on rape mangas now and there’s so many out there. Makes you think, are the creators creating these based on personal experiences, to be topical or a genuine enjoyment for gay rape culture? I feel like this skewed reality from artists really does warp some readers to see this as a normalised behaviour and it’s a very dangerous precedent. Anyone reading this btw, rape culture isn’t normal. I wonder if because in Japan, Korea etc, LGBT isn’t a big thing or really a thing and gay relationship culture is often through sexual abuse or emotional manipulation? I’ve become desensitised to yaoi manga now unfortunately due to these mangas. This isn’t to say they are bad, some have amazing plots that do tell genuine stories however, some simply seem to be a replay of the artists fetish/s. If you’ve also read a lot of mangas like this lemme know how you feel towards these rape themed mangas!!
It’s unnecessary. Rape is so damn unnecessary in many situations under all circumstances. Take this manhua as an example, that guy could have just beat up the other, and that’s it; why does he have to rape him lol. Like I get it adds more to the plot, or no it doesn’t, it just adds more to “how fucked up this could get.” I just don’t get rape themed mangas, I read many mangas over the 4 years and I’m sad to say that many of them include rape, it’s also disappointing that many people in Japan, Korea, etc.. don’t really know much about the LGBT community and how queer relationships work. Many people just go along with it cuz it’s gay and not straight. (The rape I mean)
Mm, well, I don't like how rape doesn't have much of a long lasting effect. They conveniently sweep it under a rug as if it never happened in the first place. Apart from irritation over the overuse of the trope, I'm not actually that offended by it. I'm fine with it as long as it's portrayed as a bad thing instead of an opening to a love story between the rapist and its victim. In this case, it's clearly not 'forceful passion'. The guy beat him up and then proceeded to have his way with him.
Some people read things and take it incredibly personally so they're more offended by it than others. That's why there are people who get angry whenever another says, "it's just fiction". As long as rape isn't used as a tool to just put two people together (forcefully), I don't mind the use of it for drama/angst/etc.. as long as it's taken seriously. I really don't think we should put a lid on heavy topics.
Rape themes are nothing new in yaoi. I am actually happy that rape is being treated as rape and not some kind of romantic sex act. I tried reading veiwfinder way back when and couldn't stomach it. I am happy that society has shifted away from victim blaming and romanticizing of rape. it should be noted that rape is not actually uncommon irl, and often goes unreported.
You brought up so many good points. I personally think it’s just a lack of education on LGBT communicate that leads to these situations often arising. I was especially intrigued by your theory of emotional/physical manipulation since same-sex relationships are not common there. I’d love to see if that had any data to prove it because it seems plausible.
As a trope it’s unnecessary, overused, and hardly ever seems to have long-lasting consequences like I would expect. The characters somehow forget about it/get over it and it’s all hand-waved as being ‘love’ all along. I wish we’d get some other ways to progress plot, honestly.
I'm ok with it when it's clearly authors fantasy aka smut oneshots or rape in all it's seriousness. It bothers me when in somewhat realistic setting MC gets raped and 1 hour later he goes on with life like nothing unusual happened. Kinda like old horror movies which should be scary, but nothing makes sense and all you can do is laugh.
