I don't know if I would call it a trope, but there is a certain convention in yaoi that uke and seme status is 'fixed'. That is to say permanent. I'll admit it makes for easier story writing and of course that pays the bills if you're a mangaka. But that ain't real life. People can and do change roles. Sometimes occasionally, sometimes permanently.......
