ok but the thing is, same-sex relationship is not seen as “normal” yet in japan. even when some parts of japan have offered same sex partnership certification, they’re not the same as the “normal” marriage certificate so there are still limitations. so i understand why shiina is afraid to commit himself into a relationship with kasumi. looking at his personality, he doesn’t only think of himself but he’s also considering the things that would happen to kasumi if they started to go out.
shiina isn’t the type to be scared of taking risks - as you can see, he even took the important projects even though he knew the success rate is low. but the thing is, risk takers don’t usually take risks in everything. shiina is also the type to look at the long term effects so it is understandable that he rejected kasumi because he thinks there is no future for them.
and again, this is just my opinions though. all couple pairing in non-tragedy manga always ended up together nevertheless ¯_(ツ)_/¯
