This reminds me of East by Edith Pattou.
Apparently, it's from the German fairy tale "Snow-White and Rose-Red", where accordingly:
"Their first encounter is when the dwarf was trapped by his beard in a tree. To help the dwarf, the two girls cut his beard to free him, but the dwarf is ungrateful and angered that they have ruined his beautiful beard."
yeah thats what it reminded me of also im pretty sure there was a bear prince in that story

Dresden is not a village, it's a city. And actually also the capital of the bundesland ( State) of saxony. Fun fact: when east and west germany were stil a thing, alot of east germans watched west germanys tv shows besided thee people in dresdnen because they couldnd get the signal.
I thought the same. However I thought that maybe he left the town much, much earlier than the 1940's so maybe there weren't so many people back then. However, after googling I could see that already around year 1700 there were an estimated 40.000 citizens. So the village thing is a bit weird.

I just brought Volume 5 and just so you know it's the last volume. The story is finished. A part of me really liked the end and another part just feels empty/hurt. I still can't really believe that this is the end, I kinda hoped for something different but I think it's good nonetheless. The extra storys/novels are kinda healing after all that
