He turned his body by shifting his weight a bit and used his anchored leg to support the turn; he then used some momentum during the turn to continue falling in a desired position. Usually u often fall sideways then turn when u land to have ur back on the couch, but I guess the author just sped up the action. It looks weird since the author skipped alot of steps.
Uh- that's what happened based on personal experience... that's how I avoided face-planting on my couch or bed.
