I’m pretty sure if your ears retracted into your head, moved upward, and changed shape and size it would be pretty fucking painful so their bodies made animal characteristics that show up during emotional flares that probably hide under a layer of skin or something that the ears retract under like that weird ass jaw that the Alien from Alien has so the head has less discomfort.
And yes I pulled that theory out of my ass but the animal characteristics thing was explained by Leo/Manager Kang earlier in the webtoon. But maybe the reason is human heads look extremely awkward without human ears attached to them if they have their hair slicked back or don’t have their hair past their ears. Trust me, the space between the hairline and the jawline can be enormous without ears.
Another reason could be the author, artist, or editor didn’t like having no human ears under the cat ears or the artist was too lazy to erase and redraw the heads because drawing humans is harder than you think.
