even if he couldn't let her go, how could he do nothing all this time? you were okay with the teachers beating your beloved? now that she's actually left once you suddenly realize that her suffering was deep enough to actually do something about it? I kinda like the story but that makes my blood boil. I can forgive him imprisoning her somehow but how could he just froggin' watch those 10 years??
