im very confused. I want to love the works because the stories are cute but the rampant shit talking about homosexuality is disgusting like it was a disease. Why even make a story out of bigotry? Seriously curse this author.
I was excited when i read comments that this was warm, cute etc. No. I only see homophobia and narrow-mindedness. I feel sad for the character who pays money just for someone to talk to him. Im glad the other guy had feelings for him though and dumped the materialistic bitch.
But really, the extreme homophobia used by the author is unsettling and disgusting.
I agree. I also feel like sometimes a reality check is needed - we don’t currently live in a world where everyone is a decent human being. I come across this almost everyday - I’m a girl and a kindergarten teacher and broadly speaking, I’m asexual. When I’m talking with the children about genders, because it does come up (things like “pinks for girls” I don’t want to play with him, he’s a boy”) I always tell them “but I might be a boy to and I like those things - it makes for a great discussion with the children. And recently one of my coworkers said I should stop saying I’m a boy “because it might mess them up” when I asked what that meant they said “they could start thinking that way too”. And all I could think was, how sad. If a child (no matter the age) has someone they can identify with, it can help them make sense of their own thoughts. I never had anyone like that when I was growing up. I had bigotry, I had “somethings wrong with her”. I’m not defending this story by any means, The worlds not good enough for us yet and sometimes ugly stories are what we need. I don’t know if that made sense or anything - I basically meant if you always look on the bright side it becomes impossible to see others in their dark moments.
My own mother is sort of like the mother in the last story. She thought I needed to be fixed. It can be hard to read about things like that, but it can also be comforting for someone like me to see a character find happiness despite their parents.
If I'm reading the date correctly, this book is 20 years old, so the mindsets reflected in the stories are probably a little older. I've run into a lot of homophobic manga where it's clear the author is homophobic, but this mangaka is one I would never label that way. I've read quite a lot of their works. They tend to be about self acceptance and creating your own future. Try Bokura no Shokutaku. It's recent and you might like it more.
I understand if you view it as homophobic, but this is how some people act unfortunately and it isn't homophobic, it's realistic. Some people think it's possible to cure being gay or some nonsense like that. It's realistic in a way. The author ended it saying that they will eat together with the mother one day and we have to accept it like that.
I don’t think the author made these stories to be homophobic, but instead to show the homophobia gay people often face. Like in the last story- yes it’s completely horrible how the mother makes a herb concoction and treats her son’s homosexuality like something to “cure” but it’s not meant to promote that way of thinking. It’s just that this is the reality for some gay people. There’s conservative parents who treat their kid’s gay-ness like a disease and pray for it to go away. And it’s horrible and this shouldn’t be the life we have to live in the first place, but it is how it is. You have to make your peace with it. Yes your mom’s going to continue making those herb mixes. And you’re going to continue being gay. That’s just the way it is.

That’s horrible that your coworker said that. Gender roles are so unnecessarily honestly. I don’t know why society holds on so tightly to them. Just let people live how they want to live
