Personally, I didn't read the prequel. What I know about it helped me get to the conclusion that I wouldn't like it as much. Then again, that's just my preference; but I feel like this story can be enjoyed on it's own.
If I may, I would also like to add that I began to like this story as much as I do after reading a good part of it. Honestly, I wasn't as interested as I am now when I started. But I feel like the journey was worth it.
