I've never assumed that yaoi was in any way intended to be representative of the gay community or trying to depict realistic gay relationships. That's because, knowing where yaoi came from, expecting it to be representative seems, hmm, shall we say, wildly unrealistic? It's always stuck out like a sore thumb to me that most yaoi is simply straight ......
