I can't believe I never noticed this but- WHY IS EVERYONE HATING ON BJ ALEX. The art is GREAT. The lemons are SPECTACULAR. The characters are HOT. The plot is IMMACULATE. SO WHY IS EVERYONE HATING ON IT?? AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE??

    kirara October 21, 2020 2:29 am

Ikr i dont understand, I saw it was getting a little hate before but it's wayy more now

    pumpkinmilk October 21, 2020 2:56 am

I have a theory about that.
Part of what makes BJ Alex so brilliant is that it has cross-fujo appeal, new BL fans and traditional BL fans.

Ever read BL from the 2000’s and 90’s? Think about Finder, Saezuru, Love Mode, Okane Ga Nai, Ai No Kusabi. That shit has dark roots: rape, bad consent, self-harm sex, overbearing Semes, abusive Semes, exploitive Semes, etc. Yet, those usual Seme behaviors often go unacknowledged as being fucked up, or worse, romanticized. Yet, BL had a huge following. Why? Cause the fandom liked it. Something about those tropes spoke to people. Now, we can argue about whether people “should” be into those tropes, but let’s not waste time. That isn’t my point.

Jiwon ACTS like a typical 90’s Seme. He’s cold. He’s selfish. He pursues DG but treats him like crap. He takes advantage of DG’s blind affection. This is abuse. It is. No question.

People who don’t like BJ Alex can’t forgive Jiwon for this. The fujo fandom has changed in the last 10 years. People want more consent. They want healthy relationships. They are not interested in older, fucked up stuff.

BJ Alex is a masterpiece because it bridged these two fujo communities. We watched a typical 90’s-00’s Seme reform into a 2010’s Seme. Jiwon suffers consequences for his shitty behavior AND his behavior is not romanticized. Chanwoo regularly reminded DG (and therefore the audience) that what Jiwon was doing WAS NOT OKAY. And more than that, after Jiwon reforms, we got to observe him live out his behavior change. We didn’t have to just take the creator’s word for it. We got proof. Jiwon changed. Actually reformed. Amazing.

Because of this, BJ Alex appeals to 90’s-00’s fans AND 2010’s+ fans. It moves the entire BL genre forward. It’s amazing, both from a genre perspective and literary perspective. Anyone who says otherwise just doesn’t get it.

I understand all of what you said but it's not real? If this is warping anyone's view on what a real life relationship is meant to be then they have a few screws loose. I agree that what some characters did was wrong but I dont think it's necessarily bad if people enjoyed reading it. I also dont think it's bad if people didn't enjoy reading it because that's their opinion and i respect that. I only think that it becomes a problem when someone takes this and projects it onto real life relationships...

Ah, I was thinking the exact same thing.

I dislike sex without affection (which it was at the start), then later it just gets boring and I get tired of all the characters , plus the uke's hairstyle is a no <3 from me. Also, everything that the user Blue said further adds onto my reasons for disliking BJ Alex.

Jiwon was a dick wasn't he (〜 ̄△ ̄)〜 However, I still feel as though there was character development. Jiwon projected his feelings the wrong way. I'm not sure if DG realized that or if he still loved him during that scene, but in the end they're all just characters. I def don't think we should be hating the artist for this. It's clear that her readers understood what Jiwon did was wrong and that the start of his relationship with DG was toxic.

I agree with you when you say that the trope "from rape to love" is ass and that the author could have gone about presenting their relationship in a better way, and i am in NO way saying that this is okay in real life but im still sticking to what i said in my first response.

WAIT I REMEMBER YOU. Didn’t I send you a private message because I saw you shitting all over POTN and BJ Alex and thought you’d be interesting to talk to? I sent it privately because I thought a public argument would be distasteful. I swear that was you. You never replied, ROFL. Maybe you’ll reply now.

Yes, it is a generalization. I am commenting on the general trend that pre-00’s BL had much darker content and overall BL is becoming healthier. Of course there are oodles of exceptions to this. Both directions. You are correct. I am talking about a general trend.

I don’t think Jiwon’s behavior is glossed over. Chanwoo regularly tells DG that Jiwon is being shit to him. The issue is that DG doesn’t listen because he has a celebrity crush on Alex. When anyone loves someone that much, has that type of celebrity worship for someone, the power is too imbalanced and someone actually cannot consent at all. The celebrity has too much power and influence over the fan for true consent to even be an option.

And in BJ Alex, this is fully expressed. DG thought he was consenting but he literally couldn’t, and he suffers for it. This is interesting! There are plenty of celebrity x fan BL stories and this impossible consent issue never comes up. Not that I’ve seen anyway.

I don’t know if you’ll care about this or if this will persuade you (hell I don’t even know if this is just my crazy interpretation or intentional on the creator’s part), but I think DG remains Celebrity Blind to Jiwon up until the end. That’s why DG was able to forgive Jiwon in the first place.

Let me slow down a minute. During Jiwon’s “confession” scene to Chanwoo, I was so annoyed that Jiwon didn’t actually say anything positive about DG. When Chanwoo asked what Jiwon likes about DG, Jiwon named a bunch of things he didn’t like about DG and then said it was endearing now for whatever reason.

In that interim, DG made a huge effort to move on from Jiwon. And he would have done it if Jiwon hadn’t chased after him. I admit, when DG forgave Jiwon and gave him a second chance, I couldn’t help but think, “DG, I hate to say this, but you really shouldn’t have forgiven him. He was terrible to you. How could you forgive him?”

The answer was Celebrity Blindness. It’s not that DG/the plot ignored the rape. It’s more that it’s appropriate to the dangers of getting involved with someone you blindly worship. DG was still too starstruck. He didn’t really KNOW Jiwon. Even by Ch 61. Neither of them really knew each other. But that’s what made DG’s forgiveness feel believable.

Then post-Ch 61, the sweet scenes are Jiwon making a goddamn effort to actually get to know and understand DG. Jiwon thought he was in love with DG, but he wasn’t. DG thought he was in love with Jiwon, but he wasn’t. Jiwon didn’t know anything about DG and DG didn’t really know Jiwon. Maybe DG loved Alex, but not Jiwon. And I think that’s around the time when Jiwon shares his past trauma with DG and his family and why Jiwon is so guarded, and that’s when DG realizes he is actually the only person who knows the real Jiwon, because he knows Jiwon AND Alex and accepts them both. I think that’s the moment DG actually understands Jiwon. That’s when the Celebrity Blindness wears off. That’s when DG’s love becomes real.

It weakens the big confession scene, but I think that chapters 61-83 are the time when DG and Jiwon actually fall in love. They start forming healthy relationship patterns. They build intimacy. They reform. And it’s beautiful.

But all this stuff is what makes the series interesting! It has depth. It plays with tropes. It bridges generations of fandoms.

And I respect fujo who think rape under any circumstances is deplorable and inexcusable, but there’s a difference between “this isn’t to my taste” vs. “this whole series is bad.”

BJ Alex isn’t bad. It advanced the whole BL genre.
