Her friend did not die. That’s the cover story they used for why she’s gone. The friend asked the FL to take care of her son- since the mom/friend plans to run away with her lover. No one would accept it if they knew the truth that the mother is alive and she just left with her lover so they made up the story that she died. Both the FL and Duke know the truth.

The translations aren’t great so it’s hard to understand but what I got from it is basically: she’s originally from the current work she lives in and is a wizard with too much power for a single human body. So she split her powers or soul and made/put in to a girl from the modern world. She could go back and forth between the bodies and lived both lives, always a day each. Now that there seems to be issues with the connection with her body/powers due to getting hit by a car- she wants to hurriedly get rid of the modern world body and I guess return her soul/powers she originally had to herself.
