[This is a long post btw, essay-article worthy, so be prepared if you do read.]
BDSM is a very touchy topic for me. Personally, it’s not a favorite and I think there are instances that are just far too inhumane to find attractive in any way but I know people who do sex-work and domintrax work and I respect them and the medium as a form when there’s consent between two people. While, I’d argue SB is less than BDSM and more of just ‘Sadism porn’ (hence the title) I did notice how the translator refers Duna as a dominatrix and how the korean author themselves has looked at BDSM as their inspo so it’s the only reason I can classify this webtoon as one catering to those communities.
Consent. See that’s the tricky word here that feels like a foreign concept when it comes to a lot of Pornhwas. Consent is almost non-existent these webtoons and I think it’s more of a primal and possessive trait that comes from people seeing sex as something you “take” rather than a “experience with each other”. It muddles sex into something very depraved and depressing at times but anything for a quick nut, right? If pedophilia and age-gap is hentai’s thing than i’d say non-con/rape is pornhwa’s.
And while there is such a broad approach to this topic, I think talking about Consent in BDSM pornhwas is something I’d like to briefly touch here. To say it short; a lot of these artists draw bdsm/femdom or maledom with the idea it’s synonymous to non-con/rape and it shows just how ill-informed they are about the BDSM community. BDSM thrives on the acknowledgment of consent, it’s the reason it’s one of those kinks that have a literal ‘safeword’ for it. You are both in a role that you both choose with trust and communication. When the sex is over, so are the roles and they don’t overlap as many would think they do. BDSM to many is empowering, liberating, and freeing from societal norms and lifestyles. Ruby the dominatrix (on WatchCut) once said people come to her to “relax, escape the stresses of reality” whatever form that may be. I think that sums up perfectly what her work is and what it means for people besides a kink.
So I find it sad, really. That such an important aspect of BDSM which is the consent (that in form births a unique intimacy that’s needed in sex) is treated as an arbitrary concept in these webtoons. I wonder if people feel as if the minute there’s consent it becomes “vanilla” or “soft” but that’s simply not true. Choking, pegging, smacking, roleplay, etc are all things that continue to thrive with consent and it’s personally heartwarming to know that someone will openly reveal their desires and secrets to you because of the character of your person. I’m sure if Duna and Minho were cordial and trusting with one another and a sex scene like this happened again, it would be even better.
The arguments would be “well she has to force this on him so he’ll like it more in the future because he’s arrogant” but that again isn’t true. There’s vulnerability here in both scenarios but the one with trust and respect offers the idea of Minho coming back to sex like this with a more liberal mindset and possibly a later fan of it. This version however offers Minho being less distrustful and humiliated that would make each time he has sex more and more of something dreadful than fun.. that even if he were to actually end up to like being pegged, which he looks great at, he would simultaneously feel ashamed for liking it at all. He might associate being pegged as a depraved interest and in sort consider himself a sick individual. There’s nothing sick about enjoying sex in a different way, and there’s nothing shameful about being pegged but by Duna introducing him to pegging in such a horrific scenario what do you think that will teach him? Perhaps he’ll even consider this his emasculation.
Of course, the logical thing would’ve been for Minho to have said no because if he was too prideful to accept money from a friend last time then he should’ve been more prideful with Duna... and considering she’s already defiled him once it wouldn’t be a hard ‘no’, right? Well I guess for plot it was, hahaha.
What’s crazy is that this has been brought to the author’s awareness and when approached with criticism or tips (because believe it or not, even pornhwa gets critiqued because.. and this is the shocker.. it’s still art and art will always be judged.) they had lashed out and had gotten get defensive. There’s always a sense of “don’t like don’t read” argument to stuff like this but not liking something is not synonymous to criticism. As long as you post something for all to see, you aren’t immune to positive or negative responses and it doesn’t make you immune to people who read your work and give you honest feedback that you reject out of bitterness. Sadistic Beauty may be an author’s indulgent piece but they post it for hundreds to see and market it for it’s BDSM content and ‘bisexuality and queer’ rep. (and I mean is this really good bi rep :/ the only bi-s (that i recall correct me if i’m wrong) being morally questionable sex-obsessed freaks... yeah playing into some stereotypes here for sure but FL is such a total badass trust me ;0) So all publicity is still publicity whether you like it or don’t. To get mad and dismissive shows you’re own immaturity and maybe that immaturity resembles Duna a bit. Oof.
yeah this is manhwa is that for me. i cant stop reading this shit no matter how many issues i have with it. it’s brainwashed me fr.
me personally it’s trashy and corny but it’s quite entertaining in that sort of way. it’ll def be a wild ride from start to end if you’ve seen household affairs (same author) that story was ridiculous but that made it quite the ride lol. i’ve stopped reading this long ago so i can’t speak on anymore of this webtoon ^^
tbt to the housewife webtoon that started it all even some characters look the same. this shit is so trash bad and toxic you can literally tell the minute you see it a man wrote it but it’s so bad that it’s good and i can’t stop looking away WHAT IS WRONG WITH MEN SOMETIMES WHY WOULD THEY WRITE THIS LMAOAOOAOA
But let’s not lie and say as if this reaction although comedic relief is absolutely how a lot of these idol fans view celebrities? It’s scary to think how possessive and dehumanizing fans can be when they build up an illusion of somebody they don’t know and never bothered to truly know. Just to fit into their little world and be perfect.
The reason there’s such a strong reaction in the comments about this chapter is how close to home her reaction could be with REAL fans.
Also arguing that sex work is normalized in the U.S. and accepted is kind of a lie. It’s barely decriminalized in some states and sex work and is still stigmatized earning young women terms like “thot” and “belonging to the streets.” And South Korea isn’t any better, there’s a literal term they use for people they deem wh*res and it’s basically being called a “mop”.
Honestly, this MC was kind of annoying to me with her attitude and whatnot before but this takes the cake. Especially since so many people on this site are quite “conservative” and are quick to label people like that. It’s sucks even more because I’m a fan of the author’s other work Missing O and it features sexually liberated women who are not afraid of having sex and having lots of it. In fact the main girl has been called the exact terms this MC is using on her idol. It’s a bit jarring seeing such a switch on opinion when the gender roles are flipped.
You’re so right. I’m a fan of some groups and bands but I would never go to such lengths to idolize someone and put them into a narrative I’ve created in my head. Also, a lot people who enter sex work aren’t necessarily there because they want to. There are many other cases where people have resorted to sex work because they need money to stay alive, but your point is still valid. As far as people being conservative, he’ll yeah they are. They’re quick to judge the heterosexual manhwa because I’m sure most people here read mostly yaoi so they end up comparing it. Even though I can understand why you’re upset, I think that if that’s the mentality of most people in Korea, then it kinda fits unfortunately. I’m not saying it’s right bc technically it’s none of our business, but we don’t always have to agree with every step of a story so there’s really no point.
the worst part being that when they bring up the fictional version of their Woody Allen and then he tries to say we don’t know anything about their situations (even though like half of the family has come out with stories) and that they’re happy and it was love and says that to insinuate his relationship with the girl .. and then proceeds to have the most toxic power imbalanced immoral relationship with her yet.
Like I can’t tell if this is like self awareness to the masterpiece or if the author is complete fucking idiot. Either way, this author definitely has a kink for young women in horrible situations and I think he should seek deliverance
