This could have been such a great vanilla story (romance-wise), but that psycho ruined the whole vibe... That specific conflict was absolutely unnecessary, there's a ton of cliche tropes author could have used *sigh* ... They were already using the miscommunication/ misinterpretation tropes.
Anyways, they as couple are green flags and so are their family and friends, and that's always good.
