he was taking a stroll one day and he kindly gave a homeless mother who was carrying the baby (Charles) a bag of gold coins on the street, but because he did that some other beggar robbed her for it (killing her) and he came across her body again later on the same street still holding the baby so he took Charles to take responsibility for causing the mothers death
i forgot what chapter but it definitely happened before he first saw Lord "Skar" and shortly after finding out the news of Karels death from Julian
And to add salt to the wound, Sasya named the baby Charles bc it's a translation for the namen Karel, the baby's blonde hair and blue eyes reminded Sasya of Karel!
