I can't understand why he takes the beating as a full grown adult. That inheritance must be far more important than his own self-respect. I'm not throwing shade at ml, his father is a disgusting trash but it makes me furious how he doesn't stand up for himself. I hope the father suffers a lot, what a trashy parent.

I do agree. If you're being abused since you were a child, you'll view abuse as a normal situation for you (which is sad) because you grew up in that kind of environment. And in some instances, if you don't get beat up or the abuse stop, you'll definitely feel something is wrong. Comfortability and safety is going to feel like a dangerous situation.
It is also different if you're abuser is your parents/guardian. As a child you view parents/guardian as someone who will guide you, so in your eyes they are right. Now if that parents/guardian abuses you, you'll think that they are right and you did something wrong. The child will take abuse as a punishment.
This type of abuse is really hard to escape, and they sometimes (most probably) develop trauma bond.
