It’s rare that D.I.D. gets a positive light in media. Although there are definitely flaws it’s a start, I understand that some parts are added for the story aspect of it but an adult can NOT develop D.I.D.
The only way for an adult to “develop” D.I.D. is if they had underlying symptoms for years. Most people with D.I.D. get diagnosed later in life but D.I.D. typically develops in young children since it’s easier for their underdeveloped brains to “shatter” from trauma. The latest someone might fully develop D.I.D. is 8/10 years old but that’s after years of symptoms (so basically what I mean is a system is fully on their way rather than just getting started) adult brains are more prepared/adapt in handling trauma there for the brain doesn’t need to produce a “scapegoat” such as alters to hide away/ignore the trauma.
An adult with D.I.D. can fully integrate and if new trauma is present there are chances of new alters forming from said trauma.
In some systems alters can communicate with each other internally while some can only communicate externally remember all systems work differently.
Now I’m unsure if in real life alters switch between each other after sleeping but as far as I’m aware that’s not the case.
In D.I.D. the system chooses a host which in most cases the original host is the person who first experienced the trauma. The system then does everything in its power to make sure that the host is not aware that the system exist. Which is why in most cases when the host becomes aware the system tends to crash since the alters are now trying to decide if they should present themselves or hide. Now switching is when an alter fronts which basically means that they are now in control of the body. There is also co- consciousness where there are two or more alters aware and present. This is where the alter does not have blackouts and will remember what has been happening to the body. Usually when another alter fronts the host/alter that is switched out blackouts and won’t remember the events that took place while the other alter is fronting unless they are co-conscious. The host can change and the host can also integrate with an other alter. Alters can also split creating two new alters. In order for a system to fully integrate to become one personality it takes years of therapy but like I said it is possible. I can go for longer but I’ll hold my breath.
