I agree with you. It’s hard to have impactful/banger storylines all the time but to switch up the dynamics or troupes is a good way to help that happen. I love bdsm/power bottom/thriller/horror bl and yaoi stories but they are hard to find. More common is the gritty angst type so this was a nice find or as you call a “rare gem” :). I thought the top was ugly (body was ok but the bottom was pretty) the art was actually mid imo but I have a diff preference (not dissing the art/author). I rated it high because it’s still a good piece overall.

People don't complain about the sex, but about the fact it's a lil too much chapter after chapter, so it doesn't hit the same. You get super desensitized when in a story, it happens all the time and there's no sexual tension anymore, y'know.
