I don't think that their relationship is "toxic" as in a sense in wich they're constantly hurting each other on purpose and behaving in a way that could be considered abusive. I feel that more than that, the problem is that what they want and need don't really align at the moment.
They have a huge gap between them in experience that cannot be filled easily, but they still want to be together, so they have decided to wait until they can have a better understanding of each other, their wants and needs.
It's not like they're "on a break", I felt that "Wait for me" more as a vague promise thrown out into the open, almost as if saying "if we meet again at some point in the future, let's try again", not as in "we're gonna force this relationship to happen even if it doesn't work".
