I think if she didn't frighten her away, she would have looked at the Duke for answers when he obviously wasn't looking too well. She was just trying to hide his symptoms best she could, and I think it probably wouldn't have worked any other way. She was convincing that way. She was able to keep the butler out as well, being "angry".
But she wouldn't have left as fast if mc was kind to her, she would've been like awh you're so kind which by then the maid would've seen the ml pass out which can't happen.
