It's impossible to overcome alcohol addiction so quickly and without experiencing withdrawal. He may have lived as a drunk but he wasn't addicted.
He did have a bad habit of using alcohol as a coping mechanism (a good example is when he got drunk after being "rejected" by his teacher for the first time) but he never experienced cravings like an addict does.
