I'm not defending the mom's behavior but she was 9, not 6. Dad not around, just might have been a tough choice a single mom felt she had to make. Son needed to get to his match, daughter might have slept through most of the time they were away. The cake was to make it up to her for leaving her alone. Was just a bad deal all around.
