As someone who has no plan of ever getting married, I understand Kotani. But, like... it is something you have to mention early on in your relationship (also IRL). I do that because I know what I'm looking for and I don't want people who are interested in me to waste their time.
Then again... I can see Kotani really loves him, enough to compromise.
