Yeah kaiju literally means "strange creature" but nowadays it just means "monster." Doesn't have anything to do with size but Godzilla will do that to you.

But after I read your comment I googled it again and another result does say exactly that!! Now it makes way more sense why the manga is called what it is and what was bugging me isn't bugging me anymore!
