I loved this from start to finish. While the pacing was a bit off putting at times (like sudden time jumps and flashbacks that could have been integrated better), I couldn’t stop reading nonetheless.
It isn’t an insanely unique story, but it really hooked me in because it had a quality or charm I haven’t really seen in any other BL I’ve read as of late. Also, just gunna be honest here, i fucking love the nerdy soft glasses boy x blond rowdy boy trope and I’ll take that any day. (And this one was done so well!! Ahhh!)
It didn’t focus on their romance or anything for most of the story and while it would seem to make the story boring at first (especially if you were looking for a fast-paced super smexy immensely passionate yaoi romp of a story) the story itself was pretty cool and solid. I honestly thought the idea of not only a corrupt king, but a king who Is a ruthless pedophile was very surprising and new (to me at least) and the story handled it pretty well (for a BL story at least).
Most of all I just thought it was interesting how the plot was being moved forward by their budding romance in the background (as wolfgang promised to become king to soohyuk motivating each other from the very beginning) but the relationship, in my opinion, felt natural and slow, and knew it’s bounderies in this universe.
The art and use of colors, like for me most prominently, soohyuks contrasting purple with Wolfgang’s family lineage color of golden yellow, really made the story pop. Just the art overall was really well done and a lot was told simply visually rather than just through text which was pretty cool.
Also a quick note on how it completely took me off guard with how dark it got in some places. Like all of the deaths (especially dandy’s omg) made my heart completely sink. And yet it also felt appropriate and well implemented. The only problem i had was how lackluster the actual final climax of the rebellion was (until its final moments of course, the last chapter was done amazingly) like it might be from the horribly tranlated chapter but also it went surprisingly well for what they were up against, idk I guess I just expected more deaths from how the previous chapters set the tone up. But I guess it was a bit rushed because overall we are all here for a good BL story, and I got that and I’m happy with all of it.
So overall, yea I rlly rlly loved this one, it was slow, yet exciting and refreshing and had much more to offer than a simple yaoi fantasy drama story.
