There are characters called yandere, and some/many people may find such characters in fiction interesting (it is human nature to find what is considered different from the norm more interesting to read/watch even without justifying or condoning the actions, which is why fucked up stories or red flag characters are more popular). However this story is probably more realistic and graphic than most yandere stories out there because of how the author emphasizes the main character's psychological responses and how the character acts, that's why people might find it more disturbing. For spoilers, the MC has short term memory loss due to depression and it's only temporary, not that he forgets all, he still remembers everything and his past trauma in the end (pretty realistic than most amnesia plot). I think people should have expected that from the beginning, like there's a 99% chance that the MC will still end up with the toxic ML in a toxic story, even chapter 1(prologue) already gave a big spoiler of who the main ML is and how the story will go.
