Stop it with the plot conveniences! PLEASE!! Like, really? The WIND blew the note away? The fucking WIND?? Are you FOR REAL? WHAT IS THIS???
What I get is “I’ll give you a present.”
I guess ..... it could be leaving the window open!? But I never got that impression and it never showed Hajin opening the window or thinking about leaving it open. Not sure how that was a present!?
I could be wrong but after he seen Hangyum’s drunken state (thinking he is kissing Hajin and then Kissing the real one). I got the feeling Hajin knows things will be okay when they talk and One interpretation is he was being naughty about a gift for the next time!? If Hajin does not have a gift with them meet again or that does play a role later than maybe it was leaving the window open. Which makes no sense for Hajin to do that but maybe a later chapter will explain. -.-;
Chapter 48 it is not explained . Maybe chapter 49.
That was how Tapas indicted what happen. When I read the Raw on 7/3 until I read Tapas a few hours ago. I never thought his present was to leave the window open. I was shocked to see it when I read Tapas’ translations. But Hajin never thought that nor did it show Hajin opening the window. Maybe in a few more chapters if there is no gift then we will know it was leaving the window open. I am conflicted on this lol.
Yeah that was the interpretation I got as well. I thought he opened the window to make Hangyum cold as a slight act of revenge, but then the wind blew the note away. But who knows. Maybe the present was something else, and next chapter we'll find Hajin covered in maple syrup sitting on Hangyum's kitchen table or something lol
Well Hajin says something different. I think that may had been about the window. I realize I translated the lines but I never put those lines back with the scene to analyze it. My aunt has a stroke around the time chapter 47 was released in Korean. I had to help my uncle and I had to step into her place to help with their business.
Sorry for misleading you and I was looking for to a naughty gift lol. Shucks. lol
Just while I’m still angry about this, I’ll go out on a limb and list a few of the toxic tropes that this manga has, in hopes of scaring away future readers.
1. Extensive use of homophobic (and generally discriminatory) slurs to signify the bottom being detached from the “gay world” before being “turned gay” by the top.
2. An unwilling bottom is forcefully taken by the top, in an attempt to show that “anyone can be gay if it’s for the right person”
3. Jokes are often made about the bottom’s “fear” of homosexuality, pertaining to jokes about rape and molestation, thus perpetuating the idea that LGBTQ+ people are depraved sexual harassers.
4. A distinctive line is defined between the “straight world” and the “gay world”, implying that being gay is the same as being part of some obscure society full of freaks.
5. A scene where an unsuspecting bottom walks around a “gay area of town” where he is harassed by wandering gay men, implying, again, that all gay men are depraved people that live in a “secluded area of town full of other gay men”
6. Romanticising the idea of being mentally and emotionally abused by your lover, with the top being shown blushing whenever he makes the bottom cry.
7. Encouraging acts of unhealthy possessiveness, where the toxic manipulation and objectification of the bottom is seen as “manly” and“dominant”
8. Endorsing rape culture(!!) by showing the all-too-familiar trope of “no means yes” and that all “straight bottoms” are just tsunderes that don’t want to “give in” to their respective tops.
9. Introducing comic-relief characters and scenes to nullify the fact that NEARLY EVERY SENTENCE being said by the characters are either homophobic, endorsing abusive relationships, or completely void of substance in order to keep the story grounded in the topic of “oh no my boss is gay! And I (a homophobic character) am being forced to date him!”
10. Justifying the top being possessive and derogatory to the bottom for the sake of “love” while gaslighting, manipulating, abusing, harassing, and threatening the bottom.
11. Oh and let’s not forget the fact that it’s a “boss and subordinate” story where a power dynamic is immediately introduced in the first chapter.
13. FINALLY. The fact that this whole list goes into detail about “tops” and “bottoms” is already a HUGE RED FLAG, because relationships in general, regardless of sexual orientation, SHOULD NOT be defined by who plays which role in a sexual encounter. Characters SHOULD NOT ben modelled after arbitrary, degrading, and stereotypical roles of “tops” and “bottoms” which are also deeply rooted in sexist/misogynistic standards.
That was my rant. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. I know I will probably get downvoted to infinity, but I really felt that these concepts should be addressed. Of course, there’s A LOT more stuff that I didn’t get into, but trust me there’s a bunch of reasons as to why we should try to stop stories like this one from being made. They are toxic and unfortunately very popular. It is time that we start to encourage stories depicting more realistic (or at least healthy) relationships rather than continuously endorsing authors like Nekota Yonezou with their gross depictions of fetishised homosexual relationships.
Fucking hate this manga. This story is the epitome of what BL has been trying to NOT BE for the past like 5+ years. I know it came out in 2013 but that fact does not exempt it from criticism. It has every quality that a toxic BL story can have, and the fact that this has an 8.8 rating is TERRIFYING. I can’t understand how anyone can find this story endearing or even worth reading. I’ve been keeping up with it because I’m hoping that some magical coincidence will make this story be one where the abused bottom DOES NOT stay with the disgusting top, for the sake of breaking free from yaoi tropes. I know that will most likely not be the case, but I have some hope. Regardless, this is still utter garbage, and I can only hope that filth such as this will cease to exist entirely in the near future.
I was excited when this story was first released, cause this author has a very attractive artstyle, and the crossdressing quality made it sound interesting and progressive. Oh how wrong I was. It fetishises drag culture, and everything about this story is just wrong and toxic lol. I just posted a BEHEMOTH of a post with most of my dislikes pertaining to this manga, but yeah. It was a missed opportunity haha.
I agree with you, but what is the way combat manga like this? Japanese authors for the most part don't give a shit about western audiences. Even if we write to problematic mangaka like Nekota Yonezou, it's very unlikely that shit like this will ever disappear. There will always be people who enjoy this, therefore there will always be an audience. The only way I can see is if the target viewership (Japanese public) become more enlightened to the LGBT cause. It's gotten better, but it's still a fucking nightmare to be publicly gay in Japan. A lot of locals still look at Nichōme with freakish wonder or disgust. The targets need to change in order for the publishers/authors to change as well.
It also makes me wonder where the distinction between fiction and reality blur for erotica that have rape and such. Romanticising it is bad, but then what of those who have "rape kinks" and recognize that it is only fiction and don't hold the same views in real life? Would it be censorship to outright ban such works?
pretty whack lmao
