Oh god! It broke my heart how Kaito sacrifice himself over and over again for naught. However, I think I might get why he did all those stuff.
It didn't seem to be the case that he got a bleeding heart, he's just following his ideology "help friends", no matter how they treated him as long as they didn't down right reject him (Kei just dropped off the radar, he never said that they couldn't be friends anymore, the same thing happened with 2 guys before, they just fleed). That's why there was a panel where he was so fed up with the situation that he called it "pain in the ass".
He saw the nature of human, of the "innocent and cute" kids, the fact that he accepted it doesn't mean that he liked it. He was just following a rule he set for himself. Lastly, I don't even think he liked Kei that much, now that the author finally let us see some of his thoughts
Nonetheless, I would love him to hell and back.ლ(´ڡ`ლ)
I will never stop being amazed by the beauty of the characters, how well drawn the emotions on their faces and the way the plot is carried out
