As a punishment or trial or something like that, a person is struck with lighting. In AoAo’s case, I think the comic mentioned him being in the wrong body, so he is going to be punished for that, and the tribulation is supposed to kill him as punishment... I think.
So in xianxia world (magical and martial world of China) usually the start of heavenly tribulation is marked by deafening thunder..The tribulation itself takes various form for each being...the purpose for tribulation is either to level you up (if u pass it) or you could die, or being relegated to lower beings, or to punish you...it's different from regular thunderstorm

Not regular humans tho, if the humans are immortals and/or going to be gods/deities, tribulations are the exams they need to pass first, to test their power, strength, endurance, and whether they fit to be in the higher rank...other heavenly beings such as dragons in this case, also experience it.. The point in tribulations is to survive it using every ounce of power you got...every author has their own concept but usually tribulations more often takes on physical and natural forms such as illogical storms, whirlwinds, fighting legendary monsters/mysthical beings, etc
