I cannot with the sadistic feel. But yeah, the connection between the mcs and how the plot progresses makes the experience more delightful and relatable(if that makes sense). Yaois with shallow plot or story line have their own merit; albeit, just humorous ridiculousness, so I just go along for the heck of it.
