This "frustrating" struggle actually makes the characters very real and well fleshed-out. Chiharu is self-aware enough that he can't just go and reciprocate very easily. He knows how big a deal it is if he does commit to Rin. And it's especially hard to either keep or release Rin. Because *Will Smiths Rin* Rin is such a damned nice fella. It's not really selfish of Chiharu to act the way he does. He is actually being pretty damned considerate. Considering to set free a good person, despite how dear they are to you, that's one of the purest kinds of love right there.
