There’s definitely more to the story than we see, the fact that he’s worried about lending him to the duchess, clearly because of her violent tendencies and jealousy towards the spinel, is something to pause on. What if he’s being an asshole because he’s trying to protect him in some way, or is going through some fucked up phase at the same time idk it’s just too early to judge
