This is what I found to be missing from most stories with romance. The reasons for falling in love are often very stupid and superficial: "she was nice to me once 10 years ago" "she's iNtErEsTiNg and not like other girls" ... or the whole love at first sight thing. I usually switch my brain off because thinking about it too much would break the immersion, but really, actual good emotional connections are so rare to see and once you find them they're such a treat!

the thing is, even with duty and responsibility, people are still people. there are many people who are in positions of power who do not wish to do what is expected of them. Just as its a duty, it is also a duty to step down if you are inadequate for the role that is expected of you. If you cannot brew coffee as a barista to if you cannot code as a software engineer, what is the reason you are following the path? I feel that is the same idea as an emperor, to an even heavier degree (especially considering millions of lives are at risk). I sympathize with Ray considering he has lived in a shadow and has never stepped up to be anything more than that. Even his sister is so much better and fit to be the empress, but she cannot due to the current emperor's prejudice. The issue with Ray renouncing the throne is that the emperor would never allow Dorothea to become heir to the throne regardless.
While duty is important, it is also up to that person to evaluate themselves and if they are FIT to be an emperor. Truthfully I will just say Ray is a bit dim-witted and easily manipulated. If he were to be crowned as emperor, he'd be easily taken advantage of and become a puppet ruler.
