we’re 30 chapters into this and I still see people complaining about the rape. i also think it’s messed up and i definitely don’t ship the mcs in a romantic relationship. but at the end of the day, this who story is fictional. it’s not real. it’s meant to be adult content for adults who know to distinguish between fiction and reality. we’re not reading this and thinking “oh this is totally okay irl”. even when i was a 14-year-old reading problematic adult content, I never thought “oh there’s nothing wrong with this”. and if kids are reading this manhwa and romanticizing rape, i think they’ll learn as they grow up that it’s incredibly wrong to like it irl.

and i also agree with you that i don't ship the two characters (i don't ship nakyum with anybody). even if seungho changes and has a hella lot of character development, it's not going to change what he's done/doing with nakyum

It's a story about ancient Korea where society is divided in classes. Nobles get to do whatever they want to peasants and face no consequences. Of course, Yoon would do what he wants to the Painter. From what he's been taught his whole life it's not wrong.
The author is being realistic to the time. No one has ever told Yoon that peasants are people too. No one would dare to someone of his status.
Yoon would never dare harm another noble. That would be very serious. Notice he stabbed redhead's spy but did not actually physically harm redhead. In old Korea and European medieval society as well, lowborn were not seen as people and they did not have rights. If a noble wanted to keep you at their estate and rape you, then you better learn to like it. No one is going to help you.
Also it's strange that the nobles in Yoon's area look down on doing it with a lowborn yet go to brothels. Brothels are nothing but lowborns who prostitute themselves. I guess it's more of Yoon's Orgy hour is a high born tradition and he's wrecking tradition.
But yeah, it's harsh. Rape was realistic in Game of Thrones too. That was just how things were in such times.
Yoon fully acknowledged he's raping the Painter and doesn't care because as far he's concerned he has the right to do what he wants to a lowborn. That's how highborn of that time thought. They would have laughed if you said it was wrong.
Rape of highborn would be a grave, grave crime. It would be treated 100% different.
Also Yoon's justification is that "I'm treating him nice". He thinks just because he's letting the kid stay at his place that he is entitled to Painter's affection. It frustrates him that the Painter seems to only loathe him. He keeps repeating the same line when Painter is upset by the rape, "Don't think highly of yourself because I'm nice to you!" Like seriously?
See how Yoon thinks. He thinks the kid is just being stubborn and ungrateful when the Painter complains about the rape. Yoon thinks he's being "nice" to the Painter and the Painter needs to be more appreciative of Yoon's "niceness".
Word. Notice how Nakyum also told himself to not delude himself and that Yoon was not looking at him while he was painting, because it was unheard of for nobles to even spare a look for low borns like Nakyum.
Lets just say Nakyum ‘knows’ his place. Its a caste system after all.
When Nakyum have a crush for Inhun, the scholar with no effing titles nor wealth (albeit too high of a self ego), he already thinks Inhun is ‘too good’ for his illiterate low born self. There is no way Nakyum even dares to think a Lord like Yoon would desire him.
There was definitely chemistry and sexual attraction between Yoon and Nakyum from the very beginning. Nakyum was dreaming and imagining Yoon holding him multiple times, but i think Nakyum rejected that idea wholly and repressed it 100% because of his low born status. He was fine having a crush to somewhat the ’achievable’ non noble learned sir, but a Lord like Yoon, no way.
i still don't think there's chemistry, or that nakyum and yoon should get together. in my opinion, i think nakyum was just curious about how it felt since he always painted/paints about it but was still a virgin. once he a got a taste, you don't see any of that chemistry anymore. i am VERY interested in how this manga will turn out, but i just hope it doesn't turn into stockholm syndrome.
or, honestly, this manga is soo good in the way it portrays the characters and story and everything. it sort of reminds me like killing stalking, which ended up as a SS case (but the whole thing was just so twisted, especially because bum like sangho since the beginning). so if the author decides to turn this into a SS case... as long as they keep it realistic? i like its progression right now (eg. you don't see nakyum enjoying it when yoon rapes him, unlike other most yaoi stories where rape = love)
Although I didn't love this, I definitely didn't hate it. This was one of the most exhausting manhwa's I've ever read, especially the parts where Kyungsoo was being raped by the brother. I skipped over most of that. I also don't like the ending... at all. I wish Kyungsoo would've stayed by himself now, like he needs to recover from all the shit he went through bc of those awful people.. AH other than that, I think this was an interesting one! (The last chapter between Kyungsoo and Yule was kinda cute ngl)
