So, elephant in the room, whats up with the girls that like BL toooo much? Like, if you read some for the plot, whatever, I've read a few and liked them. But if you only read BL as a woman, why? Wouldn't it feel nicer to read a romance or smut that you can relate to? Y'all get a bad rap for the "hes such a smol bean" stuff about grown men that I never hear it from a fujoshi herself. What is it about observing a gay relationship as a woman that is so appealing to only seek BLs and yaoi?
this probably isn’t the same reason for other girls who read mainly or strictly yaoi but for me i used to identify as a trans gay boy but after a couple of years as identifying as such i realised i had gotten more comfortable in my feminine side and preffered being a girl but i just kinda stayed reading yaoi mostly because like straight romance and yuri and stuff are so obviously directed towards a male audience and iversexualise the women SO MUCH compared to how yaoi does it
K im not the type that says that stuff I js read and go but this is my personal reason: you referred romance I could relate to, but the thing is im single asf and seeing straight couples be cute n shit is nice sometimes but sometimes it acc makes me wanna die bc I want that so bad iykwim so I rather read stuff I cant relate to lmao, ya it’s pathetic but it is what it is n I dont let this stuff effect how I view real life ppl cus like what
Maybe because there isn’t a power imbalance from the start ? It’s also less likely to include misogyny ? And that the sexualisation is on a man instead of a woman, which can be quite refreshing coming from the oversexualisation of the female body. Also, usually female characters are lacking complexity, so in that case you can’t actually relate to them. Reading BL, there is more chance that it doesn’t happen since there are more male artists, who can relate more and put more thought into their male characters ? You can really see that in GL, especially here in mangago they are in majority flat characters and sexual fantasies drawn by men.
This explains it perfectly for me. Just read it starting from this page

yeah but it’s in a different way imo like men are usually drawn in a way that’s like good and amazing like they’re drawn buff and hot and amazing and cool dude whatever but women when drawn in a sexual setting are like submissive little creature that can’t do anything and needs a big strong man like if i were to choose which one i’d want to be i’d obviously be choosing the guy who’s oversexualised in a way that makes him feel amazing than the woman who is shown to be weak and dumb
It's bc a bl relationship is smth they can never have and that fact gives them the satisfaction. They view it as cuter and more wholesome bc it's two men instead of a woman. Most of those women would find it cringe if a straight male character in a manhwa treated a girl the way the bl characters treat their partner (especially in manhua). Especially if those women are straight, it just makes sense that they prefer to see two men's bodies on each other rather than a girl. Bc they don't find it appealing. That what we call fetishism lol. It gives off the same energy of when straight men jerk off to strictly only lesbian porn. Anyways I think it is weird when a straight girl can't stand reading a straight story or a gay girl can't stand reading a gl. It's giving "I'm insecure and pathetic so I hate seeing other ppl who are like me be happy" it's the satisfaction of not being a man that keeps their pathetic selves only read bls lol
i used to love to read straight romance but after i got introduced to bl (due to my ppl pleasing tendencies), i got hooked and couldn't go back to reading het romance anymore cuz i've been bitchless since birth and a cupioromantic, so when i see those fls getting a happily ever after w a hot guy, i become green w jealousy (petty reason ik ) also seeing two hot guys making out is hot and maybe a teeny bit of dick envy as well. NOTE THAT I'M NOT A MISOGYNIST!! i read gl as well
for me, it’s just that i like looking at cute guys. there ARE some other factors. for example, in BL, there is ultimately a sense of equality between the two men even if one of the men is ‘lesser’ in comparison to the other for whatever way that may be. we live in a very patriarchal society that will follow even in the content we consume so i find that even if i read a manga about a straight couple and the woman is supposed to be seen as the more dominant one, the man will still be viewed and portrayed as ‘superior’ due to what his gender is. but like yeah the main reason is that i prefer looking at guys more than women
(please excuse any grammatical errors,i am sleep deprived)
I dont speak for all readers and I'm basing this as someone who've mainly read chinese bl novels than manhua/hwas in her lifetime. I love infinite-worlds, quick transmigration ,mecha and esper novels, and the only novels I've read that doesn't suck on balancing world building and romance that kind of genres is BL (or shounen...but shounen don't have romance) so yeah it actually just "the plot" for me LOL.
Also in romance aspects, it's romance that would never happen to me,cause ofc I'm a lady. It has a different feeling seeing two of the opposite gender feel inlove, I don't see myself on their shoes nor do i feel like inserting myself to be any characters. I dunno if it make sense but whenever i read straight novels i feel like I'm obliged to feel the way she felt in that moment, and that gives me an ick. I wanna feel like a random stranger seeing two peoples love bloom from afar. (Although in literal aspects, i am a stranger in their fictional story LOL)
Just wanna add, i think my opinion dont matter cause i am an avid reader of straight romance, BL and Action/Shounen stories and I've seen the good, the bad and the worst of these three genre, so I can't say nor anyone can say one genre is better than the other nor can we judge one genre without looking at how bad the other genre is.
