I think Alex died to give birth to another monster. Loved the art even at the beginning. I love the disproportions. It felt like 'cafe art' (dunno what that means but that's how it felt to me), like the art in "The Triplets of Belleville" (look it up it's a good movie). But to me the art felt raw and original, the improvements are impressive as well, it didn't really blot out the artist's originality just sharpened the edges.
