Is no one gonna talk about how Little Mo said a slur?

    notTexas November 14, 2020 4:19 pm

I saw another version instagram, I hate this one.

    Keisan November 14, 2020 4:25 pm

Yeah the translator fucked up there.... it was the translators choice to use that word and not 'idiot' or another less offensive word

I like this version a lot better

The translators did fucked up there, honestly. I don't think that was the author either because in Asia using that slur has kinda severe consequence and even more if you are a public figure such a singer, author, etc.

the translator didn’t fuck up tho??? saw someone who fluent in chinese say it was correct and the words used were “ 智障” which i just checked and even typing it into baidu’s intelligent translation system, it does come out with the r word. you guys can check yourselves i think even google translate says it too... maybe the other translation group used ‘idiot’ bc they are a westerner (the translation u linked comes from someone who admits they aren’t fluent in chinese either) and didn’t feel comfortable using it but this doesn’t mean that this translator was in the wrong when they were just translating it how it was. or maybe they changed it to appeal to the western audience a bit more since they knew the translation was going to us and how it’s more offensive to us but changing it does make them more inaccurate in that sense, and i don’t think asian countries view it as offensive as we do. sure if idols like the person above said use it, it’s bad but lbr that goes for all bad words, they’re not allowed to say at all. either way, that was the original word that was used. even if unfortunate. i don’t think we should bash mo or the author tho.. i think it’s just wasn’t a big deal to her for some reason and fits within no’s character given the amount of insults he throws with his tsundere personality. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ not saying using the word wasn’t wrong but i don’t think the author saw it as a big deal.

But I don't think they mean "fuck up" in the sens it was a mistake, but more like "It is a bad idea to use that word" when there's many more that can be use to replace it.

I'm not saying that they got it incorrect, the literal English word is the one that has the connotations connected to it because of how it has been used by English speakers. It doesn't matter if that's the word that happens to most directly translate to, it would have been so easy for the translator to use a different word, but they didn't. They just didn't.

Exactly. This is what I really meant.

oh i see what you mean now. and hmm I don’t think translators really need to cater politically correct terms to us if it’s what the author genuinely used though. I think especially if they are from eastern countries themselves which I think this one is.. they just don’t view it the same unfortunately. also if it’s what the author intended for mo to say then who are we to really change it?

i understand if sentences need to be changed a bit to fit a certain nuance and make us understand something in a scene better more like a metaphor or something but not things like ‘will this offend the western audience?’... again they were just going by what the author said. and its strange to give the translator more shit for it than the author who actually used it tho... the translator is probably chinese as well (like the author) given their fluent translation so they also probably didn’t know the deeply offensive meaning to it like the author bc i think they just don’t view it the same as we do. it’s a cultural difference. I agree it was wrong but there is no changing their way of thinking. it’s china which usually has a very conservative view on most things, hence the large homophobic censorship for example. not trying to turn anything into an argument btw, I was just trying to clarify and discuss civilly that the translator didn’t make a mistake in their translation (cause i thought that was being insinuated by others at first) and didn’t purposely choose the word out of thin air — which is what i was confused by at the beginning. but i don’t think it’s up to us to really be like “ur wrong” if they simply don’t view it that way that we do. :( unfortunately.

Yeah no that's entirely fair, I completely agree with you, just wish they had used another term anyway, I'm sure they've changed words before to better suit the situation it bothers me that they didn't attempt to avoid using a slur. Maybe it was just a slip but still
anyway, can only hope it doesn't happen more haha

I thought it would get better, but this whole thing is just him being r@ped over and over again. I hate it here
