I saw this coming for a while now. I've always felt off about Khaol and River's relationship... like there was just something wrong. Khaol was built on hate and just desired River and wanted to possess him. He never wanted to love River, as his heart had belonged to Kaveri all this time. Even though Kaveri desperately wants to just move on, Khaol keeps him bound, and throws away River. Heil treasured River on a fundamental level. He asked for nothing in return, but to be a friend. He never wanted River to get hurt or feel sad, and he sees humans on an equal level. He doesn't feel the need to possess people, instead he just enjoys if you stick around, and respects if you want to leave. Khaol's former brides only stick with him to keep him company, not because he's forcing them. As the god of death, he is the literal definition of moving on.

Like they say, if you like a flower, you pick it. But if you love a flower, you care for it and watch it grow.

my wishful thinking is that it all turns full circle and nezuko stops tanjiro just like he stopped her, the roles reverse and they go to find the blue spider lily. Giyuu's just gonna be like "o shit this just like that one time what beautiful sibling love"

very small spoilers...
While I was rereading this, I realized there were so many nuances I wanted to know more about, and decided to investigate.

The very beginning is a direct quote from the "Little Prince", another amazing poetic work, and that quote's about a fox and the little prince learning to "tame" each other and become special in all the world to each other, just like takara and kiyomine. This means you can kind of already tell what this story is about straight from the beginning.

When discussing the meaning of takara's name as "treasure" and about the meaning of names. Kiyomine begins to ponder on his own name. In japanese, "Kiyomine" can actually mean "pure mountain top". This is a direct reference to mount Kilimanjaro, which they are visiting. Mt. Kilimanjaro, as stated in the story, is a pure, towering, existence, almost heaven-like

It always bothered me that they never revealed the name of the tree with flowers that smelled like lily of the valley, which was planted by the friend of Kiyomine's grandfather who passed away before he could tell him. The name of this plant is Japanese Andromeda, a flowering shrub that sprouts lily of the valley-esque flowers. In Hanakotoba or the japanese language of flowers actually means "danger, sacrifice, pure love, or to die together" which makes it all the more heart breaking when you know what happens to the friend of kiyomine's grandfather. It was his way of telling him without saying anything.

These were just a few things I felt like I wanted to share. Abe Miyuki put a lot of effort into the nuances and hidden meanings behind things through symbolism, and I feel like understanding these things makes it more beautiful. It would make me happy to know at least one person read this lol

Oh wow. This is a very beautiful insight. Thank you for pointing them out. Komahoshi is a really well-made manga with aesthetic that honestly, no other BL manga can compare. It's been years since i discover this manga and reread it multiple times, but the feeling komahoshi left is just... beautiful. I'm so happy people are still reading komahoshi

Thank you so much! I also discovered this manga years ago. I'm glad that someone else can feel the beauty behind the manga,, I felt that this was too good for only me to know about it and be touched by it.

Good point! I thought it was also interesting how much internal dialogue was in this manga, it really showed me how dark Kiyomine could be when it's related to Takara, or how the minor characters perceived their relationship.

I actually think Ashiya could have Aoi inside of him or be Aoi. I'll write a seperate comment speaking about this in more depth but it is always referenced that hanae's ability to attract spirits around him reminds the other yokai of Aoi. Just off the top of my head I can distinctly remember Koura and the justice speak about it in completely different conversations. WHen ashiya loses his ability to see yokai and the scrub yokai is determined to help, Koura says that the way Ashiya compelled so many yokai to love him reminds her of Aoi, and later on in the story when the Justice is escorting Ashiya, many yokai gather to help Ashiya and the justice thought he was using his influence to force them to do so, but upon realizing he wasn't, he says that the only other person who yokai naturally gathered around and were friendly towards was Aoi. From a story telling point as well, hanae is the only person who doesn't know much about this Aoi. Whenever they are brought up there is always a mysterious air while the story focuses on Ashiya wondering what kind of person they were. I personally believe there has to be a connection, even just by Aoi passing down his power to him the one day he faked being hanae's dad. This could possibly have given the power in ashiya to see yokai, though it was not awakened until fuzzy. This loss of power in Aoi could also be the explanation of why they succumbed to the parasite shrub in the forest. (FORESHADOWING/SPECULATION): This could also be a serious plot development, possibly due to the death of sakae, Aoi feels extreme guilt and visits Hanaes family taking on the form of Sakae and thus giving Ashiya power. Aoi fell to the parasite shrub though normally they would have been able to withstand the pain the medecine brought to cure the shrub. This could lead to (I hope not) Abeno blaming Ashiya for Aoi's death after researching it due to the order from the underworld princess.
