As a turkish person, i do not want to hide my nationality but i don't usually go around exposing it, I've seen a lot of manga/manhwa/manhua about this "harem" thingy.
I'm really worried to say something wrong about it, since i'll be introducing my kin wrongly. That really scares me but i hate seeing how mangakas, authors, and people misunderstands this system, and shows it just like how they see or imagine, without any research.
What i admire most about mangas, books, animes, novels and all those stuff created is that when authors, creators, don't know about a subject, and decide on a project with a plot, they do some researches which makes them an expert about what they've written about and makes them amazing with achieving it just while creating a project! But when they don't, it might offend people, u know? Tbh it disturbs me. So here we go about some knowledge i know.
In the harem system, the sultan enters the harem through his wife's room.
Inside of the harem, everyone is given a room, good things to eat, baths in hammams every morning, and education most importantly. A woman from harem knows and reads, and plans (since they have to to higher in ranks.)
It is true that sometimes there are woman that die without even seeing the sultand or any other man... But if there are woman like that they can be married to other important people.
Most importantly, Sultans "don't rape."
One last thing i'd like to add, women from harem has a very bif influence over the sultan, since they read and write, learn about the country, they give the sultan ideas about how to rule the country, and those ideas are "important" to the sultan. They're not just some abject, to please the emperor, but all of the women the emperor calls have that kind of a value. Which is why the sultans mother, Haseki Sultan has to check inside of the harem so no one would give the emperor wrong ideas and harm him.
The mothers of sultans are very important as well. Sultan's have to get approved by their mothers in all ways.
I can't really say i am an expert in this kind of a subject but i just saw so many of this kind with so many wrong impressions that i couldn't just stop myself... Ofc there are some people in history that abused their power but.. Which country's history doesn't have such poeple in them?! As well as not all muslims are bad people, not all christians are good people, not all jehudas are not harmful, u shouldn' be prejudiced no matter what that persons nationality or color or religion is. The same goes for history as well..

I remember reading a manga that involved a harem system like the one you explained and really liked the story of it because every women in the harem had their purpose and talents to support the sultan, and the sultan was very respectful to the women as well!

I agree with you but sultans don't rape thing is a little bit complicated I think, that time women seen as more worthless, yes they knew how to read write but they could never be at the same level of men and the only thing that's being tought to them was giving birth, being a mother so yes they did give consent but it wasn't bcz of love or something pure they can't refuse sultan.One last thing maybe it is related to culture but woman who can not give birth or who doesn't want to have a child seems more worthless.Past times ┑(￣Д ￣)┍ they don't like penisless humans it's same in everywhere in turkey in england in africa doesn't matter.

This was an interesting read. I understand how this kind of setting might anger someone who's culture was taken as a reference. Tbh, I always take the setting mangas/manhwas with a grain of salt (from the cultural point of view) and never take it like it equals the referented culture.
I don't know much about harem, but there's two things I've heard about polygamy - all women ought to be loved equally and a man shouldn't have more wives than he's able to provide for. (Reality might differ tho)
But the thing about "sultan don't rape"... Idk man, it's a bit grey area to talk about. I guess it comes to two things: consent and acceptance of refusal. If the woman from harem can't say no, just yes, then it's not a real consent. If a woman say no and sultan continues anyway, then that's obvious rape. It would be different if a woman can say no and rejected sultan is like "fine one of my other wives will be willing, I hope" and go away.
And about not judging people by religion... I absolutely agree. There are good and bad people of all kinds of beliefs. I don't care if your god is God, Allah, or Spagetti monster, as long as you're not shoving your beliefs to my face, we're good. Show me respect and I show you one too.
Well, i totally agree to you, respect is one importnat thing everyone must have these days. The rape thingy of course can differ, not all sultans are the same, and in islam, its women's responsibility take care of men, and as u said a man can't get more then 4 wives and must take them only if he agrees that he can love them equally and be fair, protect the peace iniside the houshold. Does this thing with several wives really work nowadays? I have only met one man with two wives, but he is constantly working to provide for them and the wives even live in different towns and don't want to get to know each other even. And his only hobby which he seldom gets to do is gather mushrooms in the forest. But for northern Europe such familys are rare, strange even. So how is it in other places?
I guess harem as depicted here is no more, but polygamy is still practised in some cultures, probably only in those with Islam religion and parts of Africa. Also, I've heard that in Nepal (I think) the female population is so low that when a woman marries a man, she also marries his brother, if he has one...

I also never thought it could be possible here. Meeting him was like meeting someone from another planet. Although my great grandfather had at least two wives (that branch of the family are muslim) but I don't know them personally.
İt actually does, tho rare even in muslim countries... My cousin had married someone who already has a wife, not formally but in their religion, they're married. And they're even neighbours. It works well as well. If the circumstances are met, it happens. Life..
