this is about to be a long post.
also i’m not trying to come for haesoo x taekyung shippers, this is just my opinion. so i’ve been rereading love or hate and i realized that haesoo has a problem. he’s constantly putting himself into unhealthy relationships or making the relationship unhealthy. and in last week’s chapter it was shown that taekyung basically does the same thing. haesoo and taekyung are both feeding off of each other’s insecurities. haesoo just needs someone to be there whenever he’s sad and lonely, so taekyung takes advantage of that by being the person who there’s. and it became evident that he wasn’t solely being there for haesoo because he wanted to make haesoo feel better, but because he wanted to feel needed.
it seems like in haesoo’s mind—he has painted a really negative image of joowoon. when haesoo said he didn’t love joowoon i’m 100% sure both of them knew he was lying. obviously he loved him, and he still does—even taekyung realizes that, but their relationship is just complicated. he’s only pushing joowoon away because of his mom. and i feel like his mom’s disgust is only partially due to the fact that they were stepbrothers and mostly due to the fact that they are both men. so regardless of whoever haesoo wants to be with for the rest of his life, his mom will be upset and disgusted because it will be a man since haesoo is gay. joowoon obviously really cares about haesoo—(1) he’s loyal to him, and we haven’t had any reasons to believe that he sees anyone other than haesoo; (2) whenever he has free time, he wants to spend it with haesoo; (3) he’d literally do anything for him i feel like haesoo magnifies all the negative aspects of their relationship or just makes things up—for example when he claims joowoon is never there when he needs him. obviously joowoon is busy af, he’s an actor!!! so of course he can’t always be there. so haesoo feels the need to fill the void with other men, taekyung being current man. the reason taekyung is so different from all the other guys he has seen in the past is because he literally does whatever to please haesoo.
as we saw in taekyung’s past relationship, his boyfriend was upset because he would just do whatever he asked and never do anything on his own. that’s exactly what haesoo wants out of taekyung and that aspect of haesoo is what taekyung wants. so now haesoo has completely shattered joowoon’s heart because of the difficult situation rather than his lack of feelings for him—and is going to taekyung because he thinks it’s easier to be with him because of the lack of circumstances.

Any "love" that makes you miserable and hate yourself is not love at all. Sure, love has it's up and down. And true love is never easy. But true love will not make you miserable. It may hurt but always deep down you know that love is worth fighting for. True love will always equate to happiness. That's just it. In black and white.

When Haesoo said his love for Jowoon is not enough there must have been an ounce--no, a
kilo-- of truth in his words. Yes, he loves Jowoon but not enough to defy those around him. Not enough to make him stop hating himself.

My take is they found each other when they wore both feeling lonely. But they were seeking two different things. Jowoon must have been looking for a lover hence his insistence on a relationship that he might never sustain. Haesoo could have been looking for a brother/family but somewhere along the road he what longed for got mixed up.

Love is never meant to make you hate yourself and feel insecure. Love is meant to be a safe place. What they have? I don't even want none of that.

Okay, so theory time. I think ultimately this story is about three people, and how thier interactions with one another challenge thier personal beliefs about themselves and love.

Haesoo is passive.
Joowon is insecure.
Taekyung is frivolous.

Haesoo has very little self belief. We see this through his opinion about his own writing and what he believes to be a lack of talent. He stays away from meaningful relationships. He has perhaps even grown bitter of romance because of his relationship with Joowon. This relationship’s dynamic has remained in tact since the beginning. It’s antagonistic and there is always the assumption that he’ll go back to Joowon. That he is responsible for him and that they’ll engage in sex even when it’s not Haesoo’s call. (Like it or not the brothers connection is a power dynamic that it think is relevant)

Taekyung’s significance in this story means Haesoo can create a meaningful connection outside of Jowoon. It’s not a question if it’s better but It’s a different kind of relationship. And I think that’s what is important for Haesoo to experience. Hopefully he’ll learn to speak his truth and stand by it.

Joowon is insecure. It explains his aggressiveness, his territorial tendencies and his jealously. The insecurity stems from thier time as kids and making the decision that what they have is purely physical (even though he was lying). As an actor we see perhaps he has an emotional immaturity as seen through his talk with the female actress. I think this is also show by that very self satisfying knowledge that Haesoo will come back to him. When this is challenged, he acts out because he knows they could have been strengthening thier relationship but instead has relied on a thier history and his family connection. He needs to take responsibility for his actions and learn to be a better partner. That love requires a bit of humility.

Taekyung’s attitudes surrounding relationships are casual and flippant. He describes them as lollies, sweet and enjoyable when consumed but will dissolve. I think that rather than mysterious and secretive I see him
as unconcerned of the consequences. He likes sex but accepts a no, likes beautiful things, will move counties for work, will say if he likes someone, will do porn with his boyfriend if asked. As a photographer, (capturing the moment) he pursues the work he wants but is also able to conform to a brief. He has no qualms.
Haesoo’s introduction to his life I think challenges this behaviour. His interest is piqued and he feels compelled to stay. Feels attached. To find out what that means for him I think is atypical for him.

I don’t know how this will end but I hope that these challenges are what this work is about. For me anyway. Who ends up with who depends on which characters grow and learn from their past. I think that will be the most satisfying outcome.

- but it shows that some of you clearly never have been in love? I didn‘t rlly care who Henry ends up with, but the author decided for Sam and I think it was clear from the very beginning that it would be him.
Love just happens. You CANNOT decide who you fall for. If one could, Seth would long ago have chosen someone different, but he couldn‘t.

Sam always loved Henry - he just never realised it because he had no reason to. It was said that he married a friend just because she asked - because he didn‘t think much of it. He never loved her THAT way. He always saw it in a friendship kind of way. I KNOW it doesn‘t make sense - that is why it is stated that his ex-wife never understood herself, that is why they had a DIVORCE.
+ Henry decided to distance himself because he guilt tripped himself for the accident. And that Henry has always loved Sam is no mystery to us either.

Henry never loved Seth romantically - he loved the FEELINGS Seth gave him. Feelings he wished for since Highschool, feelings of being loved, appreciated and cared for like a lover that he always wanted to feel from Sam but never got. He used Seth as a coping mechanism in some kind of way. Ofc that is n o t good, nor reasonable, but if you‘re lovesick or even heartbroken and someone cares for you and makes you feel loved again you think you love the person too, when you actually just love their actions. It‘s NOT clever or fair at all(!) but Henry just depicts a human. And we humans just don‘t make sense

I‘m just glad Seth was kind to himself to let Henry go because he knew it wasn‘t healthy for him. I‘m glad he took care of himself. But the point where he said that he doesn‘t care if he‘s just a replacement for Sam, that was the point where everyone should have realised that he didn‘t have a chance.

Wistful Summer kept us all for over 60 chapters because it‘s so real - psychologically seen even are the three characters so realistic. (Almost) every action makes sense to me. So we should just all be happy with the author‘s decisions (it was planned from the very beginning after all?) and should stop hating on each other (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ
