People are wondering whether he's been drugged or something to make the drastic change in personality. In fact it's just terrible writing. The story has tied up all loose ends so there isn't a reason to continue. Unless there's a new villain. It's too late to introduce a new character so the author decided to make the price do a 180. The prince could have become jealous but he isn't brain dead. He wouldn't have gone this far nor would a competent Emperor allow him to. And to expand, tea isn't that influential. If that was the case then alcoholism amongst disadvantaged socio-economic groups wouldn't be such a problem. Tea is so cheap for us but you don't see ppl skipping out on the pub for a cuppa. The author is trying to make the Duke and duchess seem way better than anyone else, to the point the just make everyone else stupid to prove it.
