Everything made sense but I was super confused by it and if you think it's a slur of sorts, I assure you, it is not. Lots of people refer to themselves as 'The gays' and it's alright as long as you don't use it as a derogatory term like the thirteen year old gamers that yell the term at people online in an attempt insult them.

If someone was offended by the term 'gay' in general then that means that they're either homophobic or they have internalized homophobia. Either way, not really much of a ground for not using the label. If they are attracted to people of their own sex and ask to not be called gay, that's fine and their wishes should be respected. But if that is what's happening, the people who we're discussing is not, in fact, those who wish to remain without a label but gay people who have reclaimed the label and use it on a regular basis.
