The reason ppl are "overthinking" the psychological element is bc 1. the first/2nd chapters were way darker, and 2. even now that it became fluffy the author's artstyle still makes the characters eyes purposefully look intense and have that "hard to read (sometimes even evil) then overly expressive" facial expressions. It's just that masterful drawing still makes you on the edge, and i find that kind of atmosphere interesting personally. It fits with the dramatic undertones of mc's past. Also this author's previous story was very kink/bdsm based so you can understand how they want you to feel thrown off your comfort zone. Just a case of interesting stylistic choices, and in conclusion no people weren't overthinking, they were just correctly analyzing visual cues.
