I thought about some kind of situation with Morinaga's parents too, but my version was like this.
Morinaga goes to meet his parents without senpai (because he know that he'd make a ruckus), and comes back all depressed and crying (because it didn't go well I think). Senpai's always weak to Morinaga's tears, so he tries to comfort him and tells him that he cares about him and will be with him no matter what, he wouldn't say "I love you" directly, but that'd be practically a love confession. Then he takes initiative, like when his house got burned down, but more tenderly xD
