I’ve not caught up since the returning to the capital boat chapters but timeskip Abel is so stupid that it’s making this hard to read. I feel like before the timeskip there was evidence he understood more than he let on and, as the adult in the situation, his choice to protect and later die for the prince was a calculated one because he knew he was the only one who could protect him. Now it feels like he lost all of those layers and he’s just an optimistic idiot with no depth. It feels like the tone has changed from mostly serious at the start with some funny moments to comedic with few serious moments is throwing off some of the characterisation for me. Honestly, I wish this were just a childcare manhwa rather than a BL because those chapters were definitely the peak of the story for me.

No.. you're not wrong to think he's stupid but I think it'd be more accurate to say he's naive? Even before his reincarnation he grew up away from civilization and spent most of his time in the forest with his master. Actually it's because he's so naive that he was able to connect with the young prince because he belived there's good in everyone. That didn't change even when he got reincarnated it just got worse.. even when faced with war and reality he's still choosing to be naive and ignore the hard truth in front of him, to be clear I'm not saying he doesn't think bad people exist it's more so he has this specific qualities that make a person good and good people should deal with bad people? I'm not sure exactly how to put it

I think my issue is that his nativity feels odd after seeing his character pre-timeskip. He came across as a bit bumbling at times but in a reasonable way where he obviously wouldn’t understand how to navigate a conversation with a duke given his background (honestly the yapping gave me ADHD vibes which would’ve been interesting to explore but I digress). But he never seemed like a person who had no idea about anything going on around him. He understood the world in his own way - that the prince was in pain and in danger, that he was being slowly killed because of his relationship with the prince, that he COULD help and he was certain of it. He might act silly but under that silliness was an adult who was able to fend for themself to an extent. Once he ended up in the twink body he was suddenly a character who seemed to have no idea what was going on. It’s forgivable to not understand stuff when you first end up in a new body but he seems incapable of internalising information given to him even after being in that body for an extended amount period. The tone changed, like I said originally, to skew more comedic so this grown man isn’t taking obvious advice from people seriously. I can under that he has gone from a character with agency and physical prowess protecting a weaker person to becoming that weaker person but it has also weakened him as a character for me. He now has to totally rely on other people due to his new constitution while before he was reliable to others. How much of his previous characterisation was actually just naivety that I mistook for well-placed confidence in his own abilities and understanding of the situation even if that understanding was skewed. If this is a conscious choice of the character to pretend bad stuff isn’t happening then I just don’t think they are for me because I couldn’t see that in the text

I do think it’s both naivety and well placed confidence considering in his past body he had the constitution to handle what present him can not. Another factor would be because everyone around him is trying to keep a secret, even in his past life he’s pretty oblivious to what people around him are actually thinking and misunderstood their intentions until it slaps him in the face. It could also be because he has no knowledge of the people of status or anyone from the palace which is also a factor considering he was basically isolated. I think he does know but because he has no basic knowledge who is who he hasn’t fully understood and also because he knows he’s weak he has to be more careful in order not to be a burden to the people around him
