I understand you so much! If your current friends aren't into it, maybe you could find online friends that love the same stories? You could probably find a website, or a chat, about your favorites anime and manga? References, and observation. Recently, someone asked me to draw a tractor, and at first it was ugly, because i didn't really knew how a tractor really looked like, so i just drew my idea of a tractor: 2 little wheels, 2 big wheels, a cabin on top.
